Frequently asked questions

What is Zakat al-Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr is a form of zakat that must be paid by every Muslim in the month of Ramadan. It aims to purify their hearts and also make up for shortcomings of Ramadan fasting because a perfect fast is not only abstaining from eating and drinking, but also from things that are of no benefit. Zakat al-Fitr is also referred to as 'sadaqah al-fitr'.

What is the proof of the legislation?

QURAN
"Establish the Prayer, and pay the Prescribed Purifying Alms (the Zakat); and bow together with those who bow (the Muslims)."
(Al-Baqarah verse 43)

HADIS
Ibn Abbas R.A said: Rasulullah SAW enjoined Zakat al-Fitr as a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and obscenities, and to feed the poor. Whoever pays it before the (Eid) prayer, it is an accepted Zakat, and whoever pays it after the prayer, it is ordinary charity.
(Ibnu Majah)

Zakat al-Fitr was enjoined in the second year of Hijrah, the same year it was enjoined to fast Ramadhan.

What is the ruling upon it?

It is obligatory on all Muslims without exception, whether adult or children, men or women, free men or slave, who still have supplies until Eidul Fitr.

What is the wisdom of the legislation?

i. Cover deficiencies during fasting.
Zakat al-Fitr in the month of Ramadhan is like sahwi prostration in prayer, covering the lack of fasting as sahwi prostration covers the lack in prayer.

ii. Helping the poor and needy on Eidul Fitr.
From Ibn Umar R.A, Rasulullah SAW said: May they (the poor) be rich from begging on this day (Eidul Fitr).

Which group can be charged Zakat al-Fitr?

i. Muslim
Zakat al-Fitr is only obligatory for Muslims.

ii. Met with two periods
As for what is meant by two periods are the end of Ramadhan and the night of Eidul Fitr (night of 1 Syawal).

iii. Has the ability
When a person enters the beginning of the month of Syawal (the night of the month of Syawal) and has enough food for himself and those under his care, and the food is also enough to be paid as Zakat al-Fitr for himself and those under his care.

What is the rate for Zakat al-Fitr

The fitrah rate is one bushel of Baghdad equivalent to 2.70 kg of rice or its equivalent.

When is the time to pay Zakat al-Fitr?

The period of paying Zakat al-Fitr is divided into 5:

Mandatory Period
When the sun sets at the end of Ramadan until the sun rises on the 1st of Syawal

Afdal Period
Before Eid prayers

Sunnah Period
During the month of Ramadan

Makruh Period
After the Eid prayers until sunset on the 1st of Syawal

Illegal Period
After sunset on the 1st of Syawal

How is the collection of Zakat al-Fitr managed?

The distribution of zakat al-Fitr is given priority to the poor and needy, then to those other from the eight asnaf of zakat. In the context of Malaysia, the payment method of Zakat al-Fitr is determined by the religious institutions that have been authorised.
