As we enter the final quarter of 2025, many of us are already planning year-end gateways, whether with family or friends. One incredible destination worth considering is the magnificent city of Yogyakarta, located in Indonesia. This city is very rich in culture, history and natural beauty. Of course, Yogyakarta offers experiences for every traveller.

Here are 5 must-visit spots in Yogyakarta that should be on your travel list:

Candi Prambanan

An iconic cultural and architectural marvel, Prambanan Temple is one of Indonesia’s most treasured heritage sites. Built in the 9th century, the locals also refer to it as “Roro Jonggrang.” The temple complex is dominated by a towering structure dedicated to Shiva, flanked by two smaller temples devoted to Brahma and Vishnu.

Standing 47 meters tall, the main temple can be seen from afar, proudly rising above the surrounding ruins. In 1991, UNESCO recognized Prambanan as a World Heritage Site, solidifying its place as a must-visit cultural destination.

Address: Jl. Raya Solo - Yogyakarta No.16, Kranggan, Bokoharjo, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta

Timang Beach

Located in the scenic Gunung Kidul region, Timang Beach is famous for its dramatic coastline and thrilling activities. The beach has two distinct sides—white sandy shores on the east, and rugged cliffs on the west that face the open sea.

What makes Timang truly unique is the Timang Island, a rocky outcrop just offshore. The locals even hunt for giant prawns here. Adventurous travelers can take a ride on a gondola—a traditional cable cart pulled manually over 200 meters across the sea—or choose to cross via a hanging bridge.

Address: Jalan Pulau Timang, Danggolo, Purwodadi, Tepus, Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta

Opening Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Daily)

Gondola: IDR 200,000 / RM52

Suspension Bridge: IDR 100,000 / RM26

Borobudur Temple

Borobudur Temple is the world’s largest Buddhist monument and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Majestically perched atop a hill surrounded by lush greenery, this temple showcases the grandeur of Gupta architecture, reflecting India’s historical influence in the region.

Built in the 9th century under the Syailendra Dynasty, Borobudur is a pilgrimage and tourist magnet. Nearby, you'll also find Pawon Temple and Mendut Temple, which are believed to be aligned with Borobudur in a straight line. For a magical experience, consider joining a full-day tour that ends with a sunset view over the temple.

Address: Jl. Badrawati, Borobudur, Magelang Regency, Central Java

Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Daily)

Entrance Fee: From IDR 350,000 / RM95

 Sultan’s Palace (Kraton Yogyakarta)

The Kraton is the grand royal palace of the Sultan of Yogyakarta and remains a vital part of Javanese culture. The palace is strategically aligned—its northern side faces Mount Merapi, while the southern side faces the Indian Ocean, believed to be the realm of Queen Ratu Kidul, the mystical Queen of the South Sea.

Explore the complex’s regal halls, museum artifacts, and ongoing royal traditions that are still preserved today.

Address: Panembahan, Kraton, Yogyakarta City

Opening Hours: 8:30 AM – 3:00 PM (Tuesday–Sunday, Closed on Mondays)

Taman Sari

Just a short walk from the Kraton, you’ll find Taman Sari, also known as the Water Castle. This enchanting site once served as a multi-functional complex for the Sultan and his court—used for bathing, meditation, defense, and retreat.

Although many parts of the original structure have disappeared, you can still explore its beautiful bathing pools, underground tunnels, and mosques. Today, some sections of Taman Sari are even home to local residents. It’s also a hotspot for Instagram-worthy photos.

Address: Patehan, Kraton, Yogyakarta City

Opening Hours: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM (Daily)
