Indonesia is a country rich and famous for its many different types of coffee. In fact, almost every city in Indonesia has its own unique coffee with a special taste and serving style. Aceh, also known as Serambi Makkah, located on Sumatra Island, has a coffee gem called Kupi Khop, or Upside-Down Coffee.
Why is it called Kupi Khop?
Kupi Khop has its own uniqueness — it is served upside down. This special coffee comes from the western coastal area of Aceh, specifically from Meulaboh City. The tradition of serving coffee this way began with local fishermen. These fishermen had to leave their coffee to go fishing, so by turning the cup upside down, the coffee stayed warm and was protected from dust and dirt.

Besides that, this method also helps maintain low acidity levels in the coffee, making it safer and more pleasant to drink. Locals usually enjoy Gayo Coffee, known for its rich flavor, served in this unique upside-down style.
When you order Kupi Khop at coffee stalls around Aceh, it often comes with a straw. To drink it, you slip the straw under the rim of the cup and gently blow so that the coffee flows out slowly into the saucer without the grounds spilling. You can either sip it from the saucer or use the straw. Pretty unique, right?

Recognized as Cultural Heritage
In 2019, West Aceh officially declared Kupi Khop as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of the district. Today, Kupi Khop is one of the most valuable cultural treasures for the people of Aceh.
With this unique tradition, Kupi Khop is not just another coffee in Indonesia — it’s a proud symbol of Acehnese identity and heritage.
